Is anyone besides me excited about the reports that the G.I. Joe 25th Anniversary Cobra Commander with Battle Armor is being spotted in U.S. stores?
| When the original figure came out in 1986, I was pretty juiced about what this would mean for the TV show. Maybe CC wouldn’t be pushed around anymore! Maybe he’d give Serpentor a swift kick! Maybe the other Cobra characters wouldn’t constantly usurp his command!
But sadly, the Sunbow show ended around the same time, so I never got to see that happen. Sure, Armored CC showed up on the DIC G.I. Joe series, but that show was even more comical than the Sunbow Joe series (looking back, I now love the DIC Joe series, but that’s another blog).
I wasn’t done with the Joe figures, though, and I had this ultra-cool-looking Armored Cobra Commander figure to play with. So my little brother and I concocted a sort of a "lost season" of G.I. Joe. In our take on things, Cobra managed to conquer a large chunk of the United States, and the Joes are forced to work underground as rebels (probably inspired by the Joe 2-parter, Worlds Without End). Cobra Commander used his awesome new armored suit to kick Serpentor off of the Cobra throne, and you’d see a lot more of Cobra Commander actually in the thick of the battles with the Joes.

This is probably why the Armored Cobra Commander is hands-down my favorite Joe figure, and I’m so psyched to get my hands on the 25th Anniversary edition. But I forget sometimes that outside of the DIC show and a handful of the comics, the armor really didn’t figure in largely to the Joe mythos. To my Joe-loving friends, this is far from the definitive Cobra Commander.
Some places to get him - smalljoes.com, bigbadtoystore.com, but your best bet is to check your local Toys R Us.
