No Guts, No Glory
March 23rd, 2008So I’ve been revisiting an old favorite cartoon of mine, The Adventures of The Galaxy Rangers. You can find it on DVD at Amazon, if not at your local Best Buy.

When I watch shows like this, I just can’t understand how some folks can write off cartoons as being cheap, disposable kiddie fare. Here is a show with a really unique take on the wild west concept, the designs are absolutely gorgeous, and the stories are totally serviceable. It’s clear that the folks behind this show cared about what they were doing.
The only thing that falls a little short for me on the show is the voice acting. I can’t tell if it was a case weak direction, or if it’s weak acting. It’s weird to say that, though–Jerry Orbach played Zachery Foxx, the leader of the Rangers. It may be a case where the visuals carry a lot of the story, and I tend to "watch" cartoons while I draw, so I’m missing out on a lot by just listening to it. It might be that I’m used to "hammier" acting in my cartoons, I don’t know. I found a pretty cool website all about the Galaxy Rangers (warning for those at work, some sound plays at the intro), so those of you who vaguely remember the show can refresh your memories, and those of you who never caught it can get a taste of how slick it was. Definitely worth checking out, if you’re a fan of any of the sci-fi comics on Sugary Serials. Here’s a Youtube video of the Galaxy Rangers theme song–that’s another thing, the soundtrack for this series was pretty cool. |

Wow!! The intro animation looks so 80’s Anime-inspired!! (Gundam, Macross, and Saint Seiya coming immediately to mind) I don’t think I even remember watching this series! Maybe us typical Hawaii-folk wouldn’t get the cowboy references?

Yeah, it was beautifully animated, and the designs knock my socks off. I don’t know what kind of distribution it got–even in the Midwest it was only on at 6 a.m. on weekdays. So you may not have received it because of poor distribution, I don’t know.

You can also find some downloads of the great Galaxy Rangers music on this website, for those interested.
