Yes, we could have done what you suggest. If it was a page from The Front, I probably would have done it that way. I would've had panels 3/4 be a larger panel bleeding off of the page behind panels 1 & 2.

However, one of the stylistic choices we made with Galactic League of Marshals was to ape the 1960s style of comics storytelling. That means no bleeds and very few overlapping panels. In fact, I'm surprised that Mark let some of my "triangle panels pointing to a character within another panel" slide. I think for the sake of expediency of storytelling he accepted their use this time.

Still, I don't think this is necessarily a shortcoming. The fact that there are gutters there seems to direct the eye even more, so you (or at least I) read panel 3, then move on to the bottom left in panel 4.

There are always going to be things that folks disagree on as to which works better, though. Just so you know, it was a deliberate choice this time, in an attempt to deliver a storytelling feel.

Okay guys, question. In pages like this, with the way you've set up the first three panels (with two small, and then a third that takes the place of both a third panel on the top right and flowing into where a nice big fourth panel might fall), do you ever consider dropping the gutters on panels 1 and 2 and instead filling that space with even more detail from the larger third panel? Almost like having the 1st two panels laying on top of the third.

Anyway, I really like the layout of the individual panels, in particular the 3rd.
