Drozd guest strip on nemu*nemu

May 26th, 2008

Don’t mess with Action Anpan! Just sharing a guest strip my wife Anne and I did for Scott and Audra of nemu*nemu. You can find the guest strip here, or click the image below.

Action Anpan
This will come as no surprise to any of you that I’m a big, big fan of Sgt. Slaughter. He’s one of those fantastic characters who just is what he is–there’s no arc, no development to his character. There’s no dark backstory or hidden agenda. There are no surprises with him. He’s just out to be the best soldier he can be, and to stomp as many bad guys as possible. The writers of the G.I. Joe cartoon had a lot of fun with his character, writing in terrific dialogue like the following:

You’re going nowhere, space case. You’re here because you’re industrial-strength foul-up!

And

There are only two ways out of my command: on your feet like a man, or in a ditty bag. An itty, bitty, ditty bag!

The theme song for the action figure was equally awesome. Here’s a link to a YouTube video of the old commercial, which we tributed in the guest strip. There’s something wonderful in how grandiose they made his character out to be, which probably informed how he was played in the cartoon. Probably the first and only G.I. Joe superhero.

I love that guy.

  1. Blob Says:

What, precisely, is a “ditty bag”?

  2. Jerzy Drozd Says:

As far as I can remember, a “ditty bag” is a small cloth or nylon bag with a draw string at the top. I used to use them when camping in my youth–you’d put toothbrushes, soap, or other small personal items in them. So, if the Sarge was going to put you in a ditty bag, there wouldn’t be much left of you.
